‘‘Animism’’ by Adorno, Alcova, Salone del Mobile 2024

In conversation with Adorno:

Spatial rituals, scale, material embodiment have always been an important part of our approach to architecture.

We worked on the ‘’Tylissos’’ series in Crete, where part of Elina’s family is from. There we explored Ancient Minoan ceramics and objects, made for and by a society tuned with rituals around nature, Gods, bigger forces. We have never been able to decipher the Minoan civilization and its written language. However, what we are left with is so clear, so vivid and tangible is its craft. Softened by time, it is rendered ageless and so much more mystical and powerful. This language and absence of thereof inspired our process.

Minoan ceramics like most ancient clay traditions carry the finish of the technical abilities of their time. Low and uneven firing leads to soft, porous surfaces. Contrarily, we tried to distance the appearance of our ceramics from Minoan pottery through hyper-technical, high-firing, and metal-like glazes. Progressively, we searched for a new identity, through physical qualities that change in different light conditions. The changing appearance of our glazing sometimes looks light brown or black. Sometimes blueish, or transparent, exposing the grains of the stoneware clay underneath.

Ultimately, we didn’t want to make the banal and often lifeless exhibition boards, but objects that could exist on their own, even when no jewelry is exhibited on them. We then thought of vases – vessels that could have a life on their own in many shapes and change all the time; with the seasons, adorned with necklaces, different flower arrangements.

Residency with Kwak Kyungtae, 2023

During this residency Elina practiced historical and contemporary Korean ceramic making techniques, like Onggi making, Buncheong, wheethrowing & wood firing. She practiced in the traditional ceramics village Icheon, South Korea.

Icheon pottery is renowned worldwide for its jade-colored celadon porcelain (Goryeo ware, or Cheong-ja), Joseon white porcelain (Baekja), or powdery gray-blue celadon (Buncheong Sagi).

Georgiev Zabeta

Georgiev Zabeta is a multidisciplinary practice that floats within the fields of architecture, art, theory, research, and other phenomena.

We don’t believe in self-contained disciplines and focus on distilling idiosyncratic responses to complex real-life conditions, with observation and experimentation as fundamental creative forces.

Georgiev Zabeta offers a full range of bespoke architecture and interior design services, custom-made furniture and collectible design.

We focus on producing small editions of unique contemporary collectible design pieces rooted in traditional craft. You can follow us for our latest collections of ceramics, jewelry, interior decoration, contemporary furniture and lighting and unique collectible design pieces.

Hand Made Ceramic Vases, Bowls and Plates.

We create all pieces in our ceramic collection by wheel-throwing and hand-forming.

Firstly, we make them with stoneware clay, fire them once, glaze them with Manganese-saturated glazing, and re-fire them later. We make them entirely by hand without the use of any molds. In addition, you can customize our ceramic vases, bowls and plates in tableware sets. Generally, we make all our ceramic pieces food-safe.

In our ceramic studio, we explore various making techniques such as wheel throwing/hand throwing, hand building, slab shaping, pinching, and coiling. We feel that, mastering these techniques allows us to sculpt stoneware clay into various forms and shapes. For instance, we create small tableware cups, plates, and bowl sets, as well as larger jars, vases, receptacles, and more sculptural ceramic pieces.

Bespoke commissions

Consequently, we work with architects, interior and product designers to develop custom made commissions for their bespoke projects. We are open to experimenting and developing limited edition designs on request for collectors or custom interior and home decoration purposes.

We have always been fascinated by craftsmanship, art and design, making and materials. Therefore, we try to work on all sorts of object design and various scales.

Because our objects are handmade, you may find small variations in their color, texture and size.

Mouthblown glass lamps and vases

We work with techniques like free-blowing (entirely done by mouth and hands, without the use of any molds). And mouth-blowing (done by mouth and hands, but with the use of a crafted mold). We also tried other methods like casting and slumping, where sheets of glass are laid over a mold and shaped by the force of gravity.

The appearance of our mouth-blown glass lights changes depending on their thickness, the light bulb inside, reflections from other objects in an interior, and external light. We recommend using dim light bulbs to accentuate the idiosyncratic character of the glass.

We make our mouthblown glass lamps to order and in small series. You can customize our mouth blown pendants in a unique lighting installation for a specific interior. They are E27 light bulb compatible, with LED light bulb included and recommended. Additionally, you can customize the cable and ceiling rose on request. Also, we provide UK and US wiring on request.

Stainless steel lamps

We make our stainless steel metal lamps to order. They are E27 light bulb compatible, with LED light bulb included and recommended. Additionally, you can customize the cable and ceiling rose on request. We provide UK and US wiring on request. All our stainless steel lighting is welded and polished by hand with a brush or mirror finish.

We explore metal forming techniques like cutting, shaping, welding, and polishing to achieve the imagined forms. Stainless steel, also known as chrome or inox, has a higher melting point and presents more difficulty to work with. It gets softer when welded and can bend in all directions. However, we prefer it more to other metals like aluminium – which can get damaged in use easier.

Nonetheless, we are working and open to commissions with other metals like brass and bronze. We also use cast iron and bronze casting methods for very complex shapes and bespoke designs.

Sterling Silver and Pearl Jewelry

We develop our handmade jewelry pieces with local artisans in Bulgaria, where Kiril’s family is from, tapping into a not so well known history of craftsmanship. There, we test various jewelry-making methods, like forging, hammering, texturing, and dapping to create hollow or solid silver shapes. We are interested in traditional as well as contemporary jewelry making techniques.

We make our 925 Sterling Silver and Pearl Earrings and Brooches to order. You can change the configurations of the components in different ways. For instance, you can customize them with a body of 18k solid Gold or solid 925 Sterling Silver cones/spikes and matching precious metal upper ball or a variety of pearls. Additionally, we can also craft our jewelry in 999 Fine Silver upon request.

Thoughts on ‘ Collectible Design ‘

As Giulia Zappa points in her article for Domus, the rise of collectible design, limited-edition, decorative pieces, has shifted the focus from minimalism. Fairs like Design MiamiCollectible FairPAD and Salone Del Mobile highlight this tendency, emphasizing artistic storytelling and craftsmanship over functional design.

Because of this, you don’t have to be a wealthy collector anymore to own high-quality, collectible design. Naturally, we think that collectible design promotes creativity and visibility for new designers, for whom it is often hard to start their own practice.

The contemporary market now reflects these evolving tastes, increasingly valuing unique pieces. Ultimately, this shift suggests a broader acceptance of design as an art form rather than purely utilitarian objects.
